Superintendent

Dr. Ben Ferney begins his fourth year as Superintendent of Cheney Public Schools for the 2025-2026 school year. Selected by the Cheney Public Schools Board of Directors on April 22, 2022, he officially assumed the role on July 1, 2022.

A Pacific Northwest native, Dr. Ferney has dedicated his entire career to educating students in the region. He began teaching science at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, where he served for 10 years before moving into administration. He worked as a Principal Assistant at Bancroft School in Spokane Public Schools for three years, then joined Cheney Public Schools as an assistant principal at both Cheney and Westwood middle schools. He later became principal of Freeman Middle School in the Freeman School District, where he served for five years. Prior to returning to Cheney, Dr. Ferney was Superintendent of Valley School District for four years.

Dr. Ferney graduated from Mead High School and continued his education at Washington State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He went on to receive a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and a Principal Certificate from Eastern Washington University, a Superintendent Certificate from Washington State University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Gonzaga University.

In his personal life, Dr. Ferney and his wife Stacy have been married for 26 years and have two daughters. Away from work, he enjoys being active in the outdoors, which includes snow skiing, and all sorts of water sports. Fun fact, Dr. Ferney currently holds the world record for the highest air on a sit-down hydrofoil.

SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE

The Superintendent carries out policies approved by the School Board, actions taken by the Board, and is responsible for directing the District's staff. The Superintendent provides leadership and guidance for the classified and certified administrators throughout the school district and, as such, is ultimately responsible for all District operations. Cheney Public Schools patrons are encouraged to contact the school or department directly prior to reaching out to the Superintendent for assistance. We believe those directly involved in running our programs on a day-to-day basis are best equipped to address questions and concerns. Dr. Ferney is committed to working collaboratively toward solutions that enhance both district operations and the educational  experience of our students.
