PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS DESTRUCTION

Special education records that have been collected related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in Cheney Public Schools must be maintained under state and federal laws for a period of six years after these services have ended for the student. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of the District’s intent to destroy the special education records of students who are no longer receiving special education services as of the end of the 2011-12 school year or prior years.

These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or adult student notifies the District otherwise on or before September 30, 2018. These records may be useful in applying for Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc.

If you wish to obtain a copy of these records prior to their destruction, contact Student Records, 12414 S. Andrus Rd., Cheney, WA 99004, Phone: 509-559-4526. If a student, parent or guardian does not respond to this public notice prior to September 30, 2018, the District will assume consent to destroy all special education records specific to the student after that date.

CHS YEARBOOK PROGRAM RECEIVES JOSTENS' AWARD

Jostens has named the CHS yearbook program a 2018 National Yearbook Program of Excellence. This award recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy. This year's publication "Beneath the Surface" was created by students under the direction of Leah Silvieus, Cheney High School yearbook adviser. CHENEY HIGH SCHOOL'S KYLE LOUGHERY HONORED

Mr. Kyle Loughery was recently named the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association Instructor of the Year, and the CHS Sports Med. Team qualified for Nationals. Congratulations to Mr. Loughery for this honor, and for the team's accomplishments.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PACE AWARD STUDENTS

On May 24 in a ceremony attended by family members, principals and counselors, a student from each school was honored for best exhibiting a PACE Character Trait during the 2017-18 school year. EWU head football coach Aaron Best was the guest speaker, and Swoop even came to the celebration!

JOHNATHEN JACOBSEN RECOGNIZED FOR HIS ART

Cheney High School student Johnathen Jacobsen's clay/glaze work entitled "Sun" was recognized as one of the Washington State winners in the 45th Annual Superintendent's High School Art Show - receiving the Washington State School Directors' Association Award. 121 entries reached the state level. After several rounds of judging and selections, 15 winners and 8 honorable mention awardees were identified. Johnathen's artwork will be added to the permanent state collection. We are so very proud of our student artists!

CHS STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Students from Ms. Leonetti's AP Literature and Ms. Sheldon's Spanish III classes worked to donate items and fundraise $285 for World Relief - a local organization that helps refugees come to the Spokane area. Jackson, pictured with the students, is a refugee from Sudan who shared his story with these classes while they were reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and "The Kite Runner." He now works for World Relief and recently went to Bangladesh to visit the refugee camps there.

CHS ARTISTS WIN AWARDS

Cheney High School artists recently displayed their artwork in the NEWESD 101 Annual High School Art Show, and were honored for their talent. Lelie Holland received a Central Washington University $1,000 scholarship for her entry "Maggie." Maddie Kallsen received the Judge's Choice Award for "Sail Across the Open Sky." The Superintendent's Award was presented to Kyle Duncan for "Kindred Tones." The works of Johnathen Jacobsen, Kendra Wells and Sidney Fernandez received 1st place awards and were entered into the State competition. Receiving 2nd place at NEWESD were Alex Hill, Jameson Powell and Tris Hagedorn. 3rd place winners were Charlotte Bigelow, Evie Rowe, Jasmine Burnett, Jeanne Marshall, and Walker Ross. What amazing artists!

CHS CHOIR PERFORMS AT DISNEYLAND

Click on the headline above to take a look at the video that one of our parents took when the Cheney High School choir students had the opportunity to perform at Disneyland on April 26th. They also participated in a choral workshop where they got to work with a renowned clinician and record vocal tracts to several Disney movies as if they were hired musicians. What an experience for these talented young people!

MAC JAMISON HONORED AT WASA COMMUNITY LEADER AWARDS ON APRIL 25

Mac Jamison has volunteered with Cheney's READY! for Kindergarten program since it began in 2006. He has spent countless hours providing support for this important parent education and early learning training. He has also volunteered with the Cheney Special Olympics program since 1992. He helped coach and chaperone the Cheney team for 15 years and has helped organize, assemble volunteers, and operate the regional Special Olympics Track and Field Meet since 2007. Mr. Jamison has given generously to our students and our community, and we are thankful for his service and dedication to supporting kids. Congratulations, Mac - and thank you!
