Substituting in Cheney Public Schools Frequently asked Questions

Do I have to work every day?

As a Substitute you have the flexibility to manage your own schedule! Working as often as jobs are available is encouraged, however, we understand that non-work days are needed. 

Do I have flexibility in my substitute assignments?

Cheney Public Schools are made up of 5 Elementary Schools, 2 Middle Schools, 1 High School, 1 Alternative High School, and a Home schooling program. This provides diversity and flexibility in your sub assignments. The substitute placement system allows substitutes to manage their preferred schools or work sites.

What is the rate of pay for certificated substitutes?

Half day (3.50 hours) - $75.00

Full day (7 hours) - $150.00

What is the rate of pay for emergency certificated substitutes?

Half day (3.50 hours) - $67.50

Full day (7 hours) - $135.00

What is the rate of pay for classified substitutes?

Paraeducators:

Begins at $16.00 per hour to $20.89 per hour, depending on job requirements and para position.

When are substitutes paid? 

Substitutes are paid on the last work day of each month, and are one month behind, i.e., if you subbed in January you will be paid the end of February. 

What is required to become a substitute?
  • Cheney Public Schools online application (includes resume and two confidential letters of recommendation) 
  • Washington State Teaching Certificate/Permit, information available at http://www.k12.wa.us/certification/
  • Successfully passing a background check (includes fingerprinting) and a background disclosure
  • Current reference check
Employment qualifications for instructional paraeducators:
  1. Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent on file with the districtand
  2. Meet one or more of the following:
  • Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment; or
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
  • Have earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited institution of higher learning; or                                       
  • Have completed a registered apprenticeship program (currently operating in Auburn, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley school districts).
