  • CHS, CMS AND WMS TO PARTICIPATE IN STEM INITIATIVE
As the culmination of an extremely competitive grant process, Cheney High School, Cheney Middle School and Westwood Middle School have been selected to be among 45 schools across Washington state to participate in a cutting-edge initiative to provide teachers with stronger professional development in math and science teaching aligned to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.  This STEM initiative uses state-of-the-art technology that enables teachers to share their practice as they explore new ways to use technology in their professional learning.  Thanks to the hard work of many staff members involved in submitting the application, we are thrilled to be able to provide this professional development opportunity to our staff!

  • SAFE SCHOOLS ALERT SYSTEM ALWAYS AVAILABLE
Safety is one of Cheney Public Schools' top priorities, and to help safeguard our community, we have implemented SafeSchools Alert, a tip reporting service that allows students, staff and parents to submit safety concerns to our administration four different ways:
    1. Phone: 1-855-4ALERT1, Ext. 1087
    2. Text: Text #1087 + your tip to ALERT1 or 253781
    3. Email: 1087@alert1.us
    4. Web: http://1087.alert1.us

You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, drugs, vandalism or any safety issue you are concerned about.  When you submit a tip, be sure to use our district's identification code: 1087 in your communication.  Every tip is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so they can investigate and take appropriate action - and tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer. Any tip can be easily made by simply clicking on the Safe Schools icon on the left column of the district or school web page. Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to work and learn!   Sgt. Kelly Hembach, District Resource Sergeant

  • DISTRICT RECEIVES 21ST CENTURY GRANT
We are pleased to share that the District has received the 21st Century After-School Grant, which will provide funding for the next FIVE years for the after-school programs at Sunset and Betz Elementary Schools.  This grant application was truly a team effort.  We will be coordinating meetings with our community partners:  Airway Heights Parks & Recreation, Cheney Parks & Recreation, Eastern Washington University, and Communities in Schools, as we work quickly to get the after-school program up and running early this fall.  We have solid achievement data from our Sunset program, and know that the extended day for children makes a big difference!

  • HOME WORKS! RIBBON CUTTING AND COMMUNITY VISIT
Thanks to everyone who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for Home Works! on Wednesday, August 20.  Attendees learned the history of the site, and staff members spoke of the ways in which this new location has benefited their departments.  Students and staff were excited to share the new site with all of our visitors from the community who participated in the guided tours.  The District was fortunate to acquire this former Washington Air National Guard installation from the federal government through an extensive application process spanning a seven-year period of time.  The wait was worth it.  The site was purchased for a total of $29,117, funded through available capital levy funding for the necessary construction of a warehouse, along with remaining bond dollars.  The site consists of roughly 63 acres, and the total area of the buildings on the site is approximately 60,000 square feet.  The fair market value of the property is estimated to be in excess of $2 million.  District Maintenance staff have done an extraordinary job turning these old military buildings into the Home Works! School, warehouse, food storage, conference center and office space to serve our existing and future needs.  The property is central to schools across the entire District, and we are thankful we had the opportunity to purchase this property at a "surplus" price.  What a win for our District and its taxpayers!

  • WESTWOOD PATHWAYS STUDENTS EXTEND GRATITUDE
The PACE Character Trait of the Month for August is "Gratitude."  Westwood Pathways students would like to express their utmost gratitude and thanks to Mrs. Cortney Dotson, the East Bay Heritage Quilters Guild and our own local quilters from Cheney and Spokane for their beautifully crafted quilts.  These wonderful people crafted quilts and gave each of the 18 students and two of the teachers in the program a quilt.  Mrs. Dotson initiated this project and then coordinated with these talented artists to create individualized quilts based on student personalities and interests.  Students are so thankful for their individual quilts which represent so much more than warmth.  See the attachment for additional details and the names of these talented artists.
