Spring 2016 Principal’s Message
Teaching anything involves a cycle of inquiry made up of three questions. What do we want students to know? How do we get them to learn it? And finally, how do we know they have learned what we wanted them to learn? To answer these questions, teachers create learning targets and clearly communicate the targets to students. Teachers prepare thoughtful lessons and activities they believe will maximize learning. To answer the final question, we administer assessments that tell us whether or not the students learned. Tests are a vital part of the learning process. Tests help us understand what each child needs next, and they give us an overall picture of what are doing well as a school and where we need to improve. Assessments such as MAP and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment are our students’ big opportunities to show off what they know and to celebrate their hard work. While it may seem like tests take up a great deal of our time at school, a recent review by our District Assessment Coordinator showed us that students spend only 1.4% of their total time in school engaged in standardized tests. This relatively small amount of time yields a vast amount of important information that helps teachers plan for the future of all our learners. As your children engage in testing this spring, encourage them to view the tests as important opportunities, and if you have specific concerns or questions about assessments, please talk with your child’s teacher.
I am always available to hear your comments or concerns as well. Please don't hesitate to contact me at 509-559-4801.
